Small‐scale macrobenthic community structure along asymmetrical sand waves in an underwater seascape

چکیده

Abstract Sand waves are dynamic and regular bedforms that ubiquitous in sandy shelf seas. However, information about the ecological characteristics (e.g., benthic community structure) their spatial variability within these habitats is very limited. To address this knowledge gap, we undertook a field campaign summer 2017 to investigate macrofaunal composition of sand wave area off Texel (Dutch part North Sea). were asymmetrical, with longer gentle slopes approximately double length shorter steep slopes. The distribution along different parts was assessed by collecting large number box cores transect line (~1 km). We show considerable individual, biomass taxon densities, which all significantly higher on steeper waves. These results consistent trends observed both abiotic parameters video analysis measured two recent studies at same study area. Our provide valuable insight into small‐scale patterns asymmetrical bedform environments, where seem be primarily controlled physical forces, while more under biotic control.

Biological Criteria, Environmental Health and Estuarine Macrobenthic Community Structure

Biological criteria for defining water quality and the presence of acceptable levels of benthic resources are evaluated for estuarine macrobenthic communities of the lower Chesapeake Bay, USA. Models of expected community values as a function of salinity are presented for community biomass, numbers of individuals, species richness, percent biomass of deep-dwelling species, percent biomass of eq...

Biological assessment of river Haji Abad (Hormuzgan province) Using Macrobenthic Community Structure

This study aimed to investigate the population structure of benthic communities in Haji Abad River, West of Hormuzgan province. The study was conducted from October 91 till September 92. The three sites were determined based on regional topography and large benthic fauna. Sampling was performed monthly using a 500 micron Surber sampler with three replicates at each station. Samples were fixed i...

Granular size segregation in underwater sand ripples.

We report an experimental study of a binary sand bed under an oscillating water flow. The formation and evolution of ripples is observed. The appearance of a granular segregation is shown to strongly depend on the sand bed preparation. The initial wavelength of the mixture is measured. In the final steady state, a segregation in volume is observed instead of a segregation at the surface as repo...

Asymmetrical local adaptation of maize landraces along an altitudinal gradient

Crop landraces are managed populations that evolve in response to gene flow and selection. Cross-pollination among fields, seed sharing by farmers, and selection by management and environmental conditions play roles in shaping crop characteristics. We used common gardens to explore the local adaptation of maize (Zea mays ssp. mays) landrace populations from Chiapas, Mexico to altitude. We sowed...

Modelling offshore sand waves

Offshore activities often encounter large scale sand patterns, such as sand waves. Sand waves are offshore bed forms occurring at water depths of 10 to 50 m. Their wavelengths can lead up to 500 m and their heights are typically several metres. Furthermore, sand waves have been shown to migrate, with typical velocities of up to metres per year. These dynamic sand waves decrease the least naviga...
